Recognizing Faces from the Eyes Only
نویسنده
چکیده
The eyes are one of the most important facial features for recognizing human faces. Many face recognition systems today make use of local features (such as eyes) for identiication or veriica-tion of individuals, but no system to our knowledge has studied performance when the only available information is the eyes. In this paper we show that we can obtain 85% correct classiication on the popular ORL face database, when the features are extracted from the eye area only. We compare feature extraction from eigenfeatures and Gabor wavelets with features consisting of simple gray-level pixel values.

Insomniacs Misidentify Angry Faces as Fearful Faces Because of Missing the Eyes: an Eye-Tracking Study
Insomniacs were found to have compromised perception of facial expressions. Through eye movement examinations, here we test the hypothesis that this effect is due to impaired visual attention functions for retrieving diagnostic features in facial expression judgments. 23 individuals with insomnia symptoms and 23 non-insomniac controls completed a task to categorize happy, sad, fearful, and angr...
متن کاملImpaired fixation to eyes following amygdala damage arises from abnormal bottom-up attention.
SM is a patient with complete bilateral amygdala lesions who fails to fixate the eyes in faces and is consequently impaired in recognizing fear (Adolphs et al., 2005). Here we first replicated earlier findings in SM of reduced gaze to the eyes when seen in whole faces. Examination of the time course of fixations revealed that SM's reduced eye contact is particular pronounced in the first fixati...
متن کاملSingle-Unit Responses Selective for Whole Faces in the Human Amygdala
The human amygdala is critical for social cognition from faces, as borne out by impairments in recognizing facial emotion following amygdala lesions [1] and differential activation of the amygdala by faces [2-5]. Single-unit recordings in the primate amygdala have documented responses selective for faces, their identity, or emotional expression [6, 7], yet how the amygdala represents face infor...
متن کاملSpecies sensitivity of early face and eye processing
Humans are better at recognizing human faces than faces of other species. However, it is unclear whether this species sensitivity can be seen at early perceptual stages of face processing and whether it involves species sensitivity for important facial features like the eyes. These questions were addressed by comparing the modulations of the N170 ERP component to faces, eyes and eyeless faces o...
متن کاملYou Look Familiar: How Malaysian Chinese Recognize Faces
East Asian and white Western observers employ different eye movement strategies for a variety of visual processing tasks, including face processing. Recent eye tracking studies on face recognition found that East Asians tend to integrate information holistically by focusing on the nose while white Westerners perceive faces featurally by moving between the eyes and mouth. The current study exami...
